Stamp Series
Concept: These stamps represent the vibrant culture and traditions of the African American Gullah People, who live in the Southeastern coastal areas of the U.S. Their customs foster a spirit of community and unity, highlighting the richness of their heritage.
Task: Create a stamp series celebrating an American culture different from my own.
Roles: Researcher, Illustrator, Designer
Programs: Adobe Illustrator

Indigo Dye
Using indigo dye in fabric is a key part of Gullah culture that reflects the skilled craftsmanship passed down by enslaved ancestors.
Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes and cinnamon are a traditional staple in Gullah cuisine that are often baked into a crustless dessert with spices and molasses called "pone".
Musical Drum
A musical drum is a communal symbol used for ceremonial celebrations and meaningful rituals and signals the era of human rights and freedom.
Basket Weaving
Historically used for practical tasks like sorting food, fanning rice, and transporting crops, basket weaving is now considered an art.
The Process
After researching the Gullah people, I focused my designs on unique aspects of their culture. I sketched out variations and chose a bold, simple style with vibrant colors and detailed illustrations. Each stamp honors the Gullah people’s ancestors and celebrates their valued traditions.
